What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication that is FDA-approved for temporarily reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, and horizontal forehead lines. This medication is also used “off-label” to smooth wrinkles in other areas of the face. 

Botox is formulated from a natural substance called Clostridium botulinum. This substance is a neurotoxin, and when injected into targeted facial muscles, it prevents those muscles from going through their full range of motion. 

When you get Botox, you’ll still be able to make natural facial expressions, but the treated muscles won’t be strong enough to pull and tug your skin into folds, lines, and wrinkles. Botox smooths and relaxes your skin without creating an overly tight or “done” appearance. 

Many people prefer Botox over plastic surgery because they want to achieve impressive results without the risk of side effects accompanying surgical procedures.  

How long do Botox results last?

Getting your injections only takes a few moments, and your results develop within 24-48 hours. You can expect those results to last around four months, at which point you’ll begin to see your lines and wrinkles slowly returning. 

At that time, you can decide if you’d like to extend your results with another round of injections. Your practitioner can adjust your treatment to create more or less muscle relaxation in the injection area, so feel free to ask about the possibility of tweaking your treatment. 

Are there alternatives to Botox?

Botox was the first neurotoxin injectable to receive FDA approval for anti-aging. Since that time, other companies have also entered the market, and there are now many options to choose from.
